March Is Reading Month

March is a month that brings lots of fun. The weather starts warming up and children can play outside for longer periods of time. In schools across the country, March is a time for children to enjoy reading and doing literacy activities. Children do this at school as well as at home with family. ‘March is reading month’ is a great way to foster a life long love of reading.

In my preschool class, we invite secret readers to come in and read to the children. The children love a mystery and try to guess who is coming in to read.  When the door opens and the mystery reader appears, the children laugh with delight especially if the reader is their family member.

During reading month, my class participates in a contest for all the children in the school. Every week I send home a reading slip with the children. Parents then record the amount of minutes their children read every day before returning it back to me. Every Friday during the month of March, We then celebrate the reading the children did all week, I read the minutes and we clap for the children. Every child who participates will get a small token such as a pencil.
