Fine motor development is one part of the physical development of a child. Developing small muscles adds to the well being of children. The definition of fine motor skills as written on the Wikipedia.org web site is:“The coordination of small muscles, in movements—usually involving the synchronization of hands and fingers—with the eyes. Humans have a complex level of manual dexterity that can be attributed to tasks controlled by the nervous system. Fine motor skills aid in the growth of intelligence throughout the stages of human development.” Fine motor development begins in infancy when your baby brings her hands to her mouth and continues through childhood.
One goal I have for my students is for them to be ready to write when they enter kindergarten. My students are also expected to write letters, numbers and use scissors. If children write before being ready though, they may become frustrated and develop a dislike for writing
I plan fun small group activities throughout the day that encourage small muscle development. Working puzzles, cutting, coloring, or using dry erase markers on a dry erase board are always a favorite. The sensory table is a great place to develop small muscles. Children enjoy playing with Lego’s, using bug catchers to catch plastic bugs, or animals, and finding treasure hidden under sand. In the kitchen area, pretending to make a pizza or cookies, helps to develop small muscles. The children are playing and having fun while preparing for writing.
Have fun with your children read and play with them every day. You can find many activities to promote fine motor development on the following prekinders website.
